Ethical Use of AI in Public Health Communications

Last Updated: March 3, 2025

There are unique challenges faced by the field of public health communication which make the development of guidelines around the ethical use of AI essential. Public health communication must consider its direct impact on the health and well-being of communities.

So what could an ethical, yet practical, set of guidelines that can be universally applied across the public health field, with a particular focus on communication, look like? In addition to looking at other examples in similar fields, we can recognize the dynamic nature of AI. Any guidelines should evolve over time, ensuring they remain relevant and effective in guiding ethical practices in public health communication.

To respond to this need, a group of public health and technology professionals came together in 2024 to formulate an approach. Working group members were leaders from state and local public health departments, private sector, government, non-profit organizations and academic institutions.

The aim of this work is to provide a foundational set of guidelines that can be universally applied across the public health field, with a particular focus on communication. The guidelines are intended to assist:

  • Public health leaders, including executives in health departments
  • Communications staff within health departments
  • Public health professionals working in academia, government organizations, nonprofits, and businesses
  • Health promotion professionals in various public and private settings.
